Dis•location Series, 8 x 36 in. C-Prints, 2003
The thematic structure for this series revolved around investigating and mapping spray-painted construction markings written on the ground. Using a Holga camera, I intentionally overlapped frames, filling the entire roll with perpetual sequences and multiple layers of imagery. I then contact printed the roll of film, ending up with a thin strip of visual information surrounded by several inches of black. With this work, I wanted to unravel the process of seeing, using photography to explore the peripheral environments and to imply new meaning in the unintentional aesthetic acts of everyday life. The end result is a series of separate expeditions that explore not only multiple textures of time and space, but also the definition of art, as we know it.
