Reminders/Remainders #1Reminders/Remainders #2

Reminders/Remainders, Approx. 2.5 x 6 ft.,Ttoned Silver Prints & Library Slips, 2003
In this piece I paired library book return slips that had been stamped with multiple dates, with twelve different photographs of aspen trees that had been scarred with dates and initials. I was interested in the notion of a trace or “reminder” that both of these forms of mark-making provide. Visual connections were made between the relative age of both, the width and length of the library slips compared to the trunk of the aspen tree, and the light blue color of the slips compared to the quality of light in the black and white photographs. By including an ordinary form of mark making, such as due-date stamps, I was questioning what we define as art, drawing attention to unintentional aesthetic acts of the everyday world.
